While they may have traveled in very different circles, Kevin Costner and Princess Diana were undeniably two of the most famous people on the planet at roughly the same time. Kevin's movie star peak was in the late '80s and early '90s, which is exactly when Diana was at her most well known.

What was Kevin Costner and Princess Diana's relationship?

Kevin and Diana were never in any sort of relationship, even after her divorce from Prince Charles.

In an interview with People, though, Kevin said that he jumped at the chance to meet Prince William, Diana's son, when he was given the opportunity. "I happened to be in England, and I got this message that the prince would love to talk, and I said, 'What?'... and then I went, 'Okay,'" Kevin explained.

"We met in this room, and it was just us," Kevin continued. "He walked up, and we shook hands... The first line out of his mouth was, 'You know, my mom kind of fancied you.'"

It seems, then, that although Kevin and Diana didn't know one another, Diana had a crush on him from afar. During Kevin's heyday, Diana was far from the alone in having a crush on the extremely popular movie star.

Kevin declined to go into detail about what else he and the prince discussed, but said that the experience was "very sweet." Kevin added that he was left with "such fond memories of who he was, how I was approached and what we talked about."

Although Kevin didn't known Diana well, the two had been in touch while she was still alive. Back in the '90s, he had reached out about a potential sequel to The Bodyguard, which Kevin starred in with Whitney Houston.

"There was a moment that that was really flying down the tracks, very quietly, because it's how I operate," he explained, adding that the introduction had been set up by Sarah Ferguson. "It was so sweet. Sarah was the one that set this up. Sarah was very cool... when she could have been going, 'Well, I’m a princess too. What about me?' She didn’t do that at all. Diana and I began to talk."

Reflecting on his life more generally, and on his experience with Diana, he said "I’ve had an incredibly unusual, and for the most part, beautiful life."

It seems like no romance was kindled when the two of them met, but the meeting left a profound enough impression on Diana that she told one of her sons about how much she liked Kevin.

Now, as Kevin promotes his upcoming western epic Horizon, it seems he's more than willing to discuss both his recent and distant past. He never made a Bodyguard sequel with Diana, but that certainly would have been quite a spectacle.
