How did Kelly Clarkson lose weight?

In January 2024, Kelly told People that she'd begun to listen to her doctor more, after years of not doing so.

“I eat a healthy mix," she said. "I dropped weight because I’ve been listening to my doctor — a couple years I didn’t. And 90 percent of the time I’m really good at it because a protein diet is good for me anyway. I’m a Texas girl, so I like meat — sorry, vegetarians in the world!”

The singer, who moved to New York City in 2023, also added that she spent a lot of time walking around Manhattan with her kids, which helped her shed some weight as well.

Soon after that People interview, Kelly mentioned during an episode of her talk show that being pre-diabetic also motivated her to get healthy — though she admitted that it took her two years after learning she was pre-diabetic before she started acting on it.

Fast-forward to May 2024, and Kelly opened up even more about her weight-loss journey, this time during a conversation with Whoopi Goldberg.

After Kelly complimented Whoopi for how great she looked, Whoopi mentioned that she herself had lost a bunch of weight, thanks to "that wonderful shot that works for folks who need some help." In this case, Whoopi was likely referring to the type-2 diabetes medication Mounjaro, which Whoopi has spoken about taking.

Kelly replied about her own weight loss: "Mine is a different one than people assume, but I ended up having to do that too because my blood work got so bad. My doctor chased me for two years, and I was like, 'No, I'm afraid of it.' I already have thyroid problems. Everybody thinks it's Ozempic, but it's not. It's something else."

Kelly said that her treatment "aids in helping break down the sugar" because her body "doesn't do it right."

Kelly also mentioned that she hadn't noticed how much weight she had put on, but a turning point came when she watched a recorded performance of herself at the Belasco Theatre in New York City — and she didn't recognize herself.

"Literally we were watching it. We were in my house in New York like watching it. I was going to release it and then all of a sudden I paused it and I was like, 'Who the f--- is that?' I swear to God. It sounds insane."
