Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors Include Her Roles as Mother and Wife
The “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” performer’s son is a rapper and her husband is an actor from ‘The Notebook.’

Once Cyndi Lauper's farewell tour is done, she can look forward to spending more time with her son and husband. She’s gearing up for her final concerts on the road. The “True Colors” singer announced a farewell tour on June 3, 2024.
The 23-show Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour, billed as Cyndi’s first major road trip in a decade, will kick off Oct. 18 in Montreal’s Bell Centre and wrap up Dec. 5 at Chicago’s United Center.
Pre-sales for the concert dates start at 10 a.m. local time on June 4, while general ticket sales start on June 7 at 10 a.m.
So it sounds like Cyndi will be home for the holidays! Here’s what we know about her family.
Cyndi Lauper has a son with husband David Thornton.
Since 1991, Cyndi has been married to David Thornton, with whom she has one son. You might recognize David from his role as Earl Unger, one of the burglars in the 1997 film Home Alone 3. He also played John Hamilton, Rachel McAdams’s onscreen father, in the 2004 romance The Notebook. On television, David has played defense attorney Lionel Granger in 11 episodes of Law & Order and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit so far.
After meeting on the set of the 1991 comedy film Off and Running, Cyndi and David’s romance was off and running. “When we started rehearsing, David was real shy with me. I began to send him teasing notes — it’s what I do when I kinda like someone,” Cyndi told The Independent in 1992. “At nights we used to walk on the beach after dinner. One night I said, ‘I wish I was a kite flying over the waves,’ and he said, ‘Why not be a wave?’ I thought ‘Oh my God, this man is a poet.’”
The couple’s son is rapper Declyn Wallace Thornton Lauper.
In 1997, Cyndi and David welcomed their son, Declyn Wallace Thornton Lauper. Declyn has followed his famous mother into music, releasing rap songs (and even a collaboration with G-Eazy) under the name Dex Lauper.
In a Vanity Fair interview last year, Cyndi mentioned that David did much of the parenting during Declyn’s youth. “People said I was so career-driven, but once the kid came, I looked at how I can support everything: make a record, tour — and my husband would say, ‘Go to Europe, I’ve got him,’” she said. “I took my son on tour sometimes, but he needed his own space. And he makes music now. It’s more underground. He’s on SoundCloud, and he’s a terrific artist.”
Fans can get more insight into Cyndi's career — but not necessarily her family — in a new documentary.
On June 4, Paramount+ will debut the documentary Let the Canary Sing, directed by Alison Ellwood. The documentary “chronicles Lauper’s meteoric ascent to stardom and her profound impact on generations through her music, ever-evolving punk style, unwavering feminism, and tireless advocacy,” according to the streamer.
But don’t expect Cyndi to share insights about marriage and motherhood. “There were certain things I didn’t want to talk about, my husband and my son, because that was really private,” she told Vanity Fair. “The documentary is about my career, and let the canary sing.”
