Over the course of five days in late April 2024, multiple law enforcement agencies worked together to carry out an underage sex sting they called Operation Valiant Knights. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office in Florida led the investigation under the charge of Sheriff T.K. Waters, who revealed in a news conference that the suspects ranged in age from 19 to 69, per Jax Today. They were allegedly attempting to engage in sexual activities with girls they believed were anywhere between 8 and 14 years old.

According to New England Sports Network (NESN), Maddox was drafted to the Red Sox in June 2012 at which point he received a $350,000 signing bonus. Maddox was coming from Florida where he played for the University of Florida. The relief pitcher was named a "third-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association," per NESN.
Maddox spent the next five years playing for various minor league teams. In 2023, WXYZ Detroit reported that minor league players took home about "$57,200 for the six-month season if playing under a first major league contract, and $114,100 if playing under a second or later major league contract."
