Fans of Broad City used to ship Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, despite the fact that their relationship would never be more than beautiful, perfect, platonic hilarity. On and off-screen, they were a comedic duo not to be messed with, but in recent years, we’ve seen Abbi spend time with another special lady: her now-wife, Jodi Balfour.

Abbi Jacobson and Jodi Balfour married in early June or late May, finally announcing it to the public in a Cultured Mag exclusive and their own shared Instagram post. The two started dating in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, so the wedding was a celebration of the closeness they were finally able to share when they met in person. But who is Abbi’s wife, Jodi, and what was their wedding like?

Abbi Jacobson married actor Jodi Balfour.

Both Abbi and Jodi are accomplished actors. Many of us know Abbi from Broad City, although she more recently starred in Prime Video’s adaptation of A League of Their Own. While Jodi may not be as much of a household name, Jodi is just as prolific an actor.

Most recently, she played Keeley’s lover Jack in Season 3 of Ted Lasso, but she’s been on our screens since 2009. She starred as Ellen Waverly in Apple TV Plus’s For All Mankind and has had roles in The Crown, True Detective, and Supernatural, and more. But Jodi is perhaps most known for portraying Gladys in Bomb Girls.

Jodi grew up in South Africa, where she later attended college at the University of Cape Town. She later relocated to Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada, to pursue her acting career. She co-owns a coffeehouse and bake shop there called Nelson the Seagull, a nod to her South African roots. In June 2021, Jodi came out as queer on Instagram, and in October 2021, she shared that she and Abbi had been dating for over a year.

Abbi and Jodi married after more than three years of dating and a love-at-first-sight meet-cute.

Abbi and Jodi first met virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic, and when they met in person for the first time, something just clicked. “Meeting Abbi felt like the pinnacle of a long-overdue step in my own evolution,” Jodi told Cultured. “I had a very complex theory about my own relationship to romance. Then I saw Abbi standing just outside her front door and I thought, ‘Oh, I love this person. Cool.’”

“I made her walk outside to the backyard by herself,” Abbi added, “so I could have a moment to say to myself, ‘Oh God, I’m in love.’” Abbi flew out to London when Jodi was filming Ted Lasso, and at the end of the five-week visit, Abbi proposed with a toy ring. “We were both crying. Jo said, ‘You little shit, I have a ring for you, too.’” Could their love story get any cuter?

The wedding was intimate and “improvised” as many outlets have reported, since rainfall forced them to adapt what was supposed to be an outdoor seated dinner. “It was such kismet because the ceremony was not what we expected, but it was exactly what we’d hoped for,” Abbi said. “People were packed together. When we looked out at the audience, our friends were on stools, peeking through the plants, and sitting on top of the booths. I’ve never been to a wedding like that.”

Jodi added, “It really was ‘one of those nights.’ We were in a dark wooden room with no windows, an insane sound system, and a disco ball. Everyone’s nice clothes became wet rags. People were smoking who don’t smoke. Our moms did the hora. It was like we all existed in a different dimension for a while.” Jodi and Abbi’s wedding marks a celebration of queer, Jewish, and feminine love, and we are all about it.

Congrats to the happy couple!
